Workers In Oyo Tertiary Institutions Down Tools

FOUR of the tertiary institutions owned by the Oyo State government will today, 8th July embark on a three-day warning strike, over five months unpaid salary arrears. grapevine gathered that the Academic staff in four of the tertiary institution are aghast over the inability of the State government to to pay them their salaries.

The affected institutions are The Polytechnic Ibadan, the Oke-Ogun Polytechnic in Saki, the Ibarapa Polytechnic in Eruwa and Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology in Igboora.

This was disclosed in a communique issued at the end of a meeting of the Joint Action Forum of Academic Staff in Tertiary Institutions in Oyo State (JAFAS), held in Eruwa, on Tuesday.

The communique read in part: “Following the expiration of the seven days notice sent to various managements, a three-day warning strike is hereby declared over unpaid salary arrears running into five months.

“The warning strike holds between Wednesday July 8 and Friday July 10, 2015. At the end of the warning strike, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) will commence the process of embarking on full-scale strike if there is no positive development.

“The ASUP frowns at the insensitivity of government to have paid workers in tertiary institutions in the state only January, 2015 salary.

“ASUP sympathises with members over their plight and sought further cooperation to ensure success of our struggle.”

The communique was jointly signed by chairmen of the Academic Staff Unions in the institutions, Messrs Kelani Ajadi (Ibadan); S.O Olawumi (Saki); O.A Aderonmu (Eruwa) and B.A Adeniyi (Igboora).

The ASUP, the Polytechnic Ibadan chapter, had on June 24, this year, in a letter marked asupib/2015/006/003/, written a to the Rector of the institution, demanded the payment of the five months salary arrears within seven days from the receipt of the notice or risk industrial actions.
