The Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Comrade Ibeh Cico has sacked all the employees of the Directorate of Transport (DOT) of the university.

The DOT former employees had worked in that department for years and some for a decade. The president posited that his reasons for disengaging the employees include:

1. Most of them are not bonafide students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

2. To encourage accountability being that he cannot tell how much that is been generated from the transport sector.

3. To replace the sacked persons with bonafide students of UNIZIK thereby creating jobs the university students.

4. To have an accurate number of buses plying the campus roads daily.

Meanwhile, the nominees to replace the sacked DOT staff had generated various criticisms from the students.

They held that more than 90 percent of the nominees are from Engineering Faculty which is also the faculty of the SUG President. The students who made their opinion known also held that such method nomination does not encourage unionism which SUG stands for. They also held that the president’s action has not been seen as a positive approach towards restructuring the transport sector owing to the fact that since the disengagements of those persons handling it, no money is coming from that department again and that is like hindering the actions of the union elected officials.

However this non remittance of money may not be unconnected with the fact that the nominees are yet to officially commence work.

Few weeks ago, the president initiated a seven seater tricycle scheme which he called special intervention scheme and mandated the drivers to be collecting twenty naira per drop from each person that enters their keke.

The students who pleaded anonymity also held that the tricyclists don’t pay heed to the instruction of the president because they still collect thirty-naira like every other keke persons. They also held that the activities of this drivers are not regulated because those who are supposed to be incharge of the regulation had been laid off and their replacements are yet to commence work.
