UNIZIK Admits 7,000 Students Out Of 40,000 Applicants For 2014/2015

Report stemming out from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (UNIZIK) has it that the institution admit 7,000 students out of 40,000 students that applied to the institution for the 2014/2015 academic session.

NO fewer than Seven thousand (7,000) students took the oath of loyalty of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, as the institution matriculated her fresh men recently.

The matriculants all clad in different shades of their matriculation gowns with their faces beaming with unending smiles, marched gallantly as they led the procession into the venue of the event which was the convocation arena in front of the Prof. Nwako Aghagbo digital Library. They were followed by the academic staff of the institution, deans of faculties, directors of the various directorates and members of the school management. The melodious tunes by the music department led by the music maestro, Dr. Alvan Nwamara which serenaded the atmosphere gave the event a touch of class.


Members of the school management present at the epoch making event include the vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku; the deputy vice chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone; the registrar Barr. Christian Okeke; the Bursar, Mr. U.J Agu and the acting University librarian Mr. E.O Onwuka. The president of the Students Union Government, Comrade Noble Eyisi and the vice president, Comrade Precious Ozems were present as well.

In his address, the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahaneku, FAS congratulated the fresh men for being among the less than seven thousand (7000) candidates offered admission out of the more than forty thousand that had applied. He stated that the matriculation ceremony formally brings to a close the 2014/2015 admission cycle.

Prof. Ahaneku reiterated the commitment of his administration which came on board seven months ago to transforming the university that by the end of his five year tenure, it would have become one of the best five hundred universities in the world, one of the best 100 universities in Africa and the best in Nigeria. The university don stated that his administration shall harness all resources, human and material, from within and outside the university in the pursuit of the actualization of this lofty dream.

Prof. Ahaneku who was accompanied by the wife, Dr. Gladys Ahaneku asserted that his administration has put in place adequate measures, structures, plans and policies in the university in order to provide a congenial learning environment for the students. In his words, “the academic programmes of the university have grown to fourteen (14) faculties with ninety-seven (97) departments and ninety- four academic programmes and all of these programmes are accredited with the National Universities Commission.

The vice chancellor posited that for ones stay in the university to successfully end with the acquisition of a university degree, one owes certain obligations to the university. Such obligations he listed to include payment of fees, 75% attendance to lectures, avoiding examination misconduct, certificate forgery, shunning cultism which he described as an anathema in the university and related vices, wishing the fresh men a successful stay in the university of all times.

The new students were equally led on the oath on secret cults by the dean, students’ affairs, Prof. Ken Nwogu. High point of the occasion was the formal admission to the membership of Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the vice chancellor.

Some of the matriculants who spoke to this reporter expressed their joy to God for making their dream of becoming students of this Noble institution come to fruition. The duo of Oparaocha Kennedy from Mass Communication department and Ndunagu Gift from Law faculty could not hide their joy even as they promised to make their mark in the university.

In an interview with the President Students Union Government of the institution, Comrade Noble Eyisi, he urged the matriculants to remain focused in their studies, adhere strictly to what they have learnt in the course of their orientation adding that his administration would always represent the interest of the students at large.
