Unilorin To Commence Ph.D Programme In Medicine

Latest report reaching us has it that the University of Ilorin would soon commence Ph.D programme for medical doctors.

This was promulgated to schoolwatch.com.ng grapevine by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali.

Ambali dropped the hint when executives of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kwara State branch, visited him in Ilorin on Monday.

He explained that the programme was not to denigrate the certificates the doctors have but was to better equip them for their dual responsibilities in the society.

“We are creating conducive environment for doctors to work. We are interested in the doctors’ income, output and job satisfaction. The skill lab, which is first of its kind in the country, was put in place to enhance medical training.

“The Medical and Dental Council now recommends that other universities should have skill labs in the fashion of the one in our college,” Ambali said.

The vice chancellor also advised the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) against incessant strikes, stressing that “it should be a last resort.”

He said that the country deserved a stable health sector and commended the members of the NMA for their contributions to the growth of the university.

According to him, medicine is an enviable profession and medical doctors are able to function well in other fields because they are well-trained in their discipline.

“You are part of our pride in Unilorin. Unilorin College of Health Sciences has the highest number of candidates seeking to study medicine in the country.

“We have, therefore, commenced the building of a permanent structure for the college with millions being spent on the project,” he said.
