The Ekiti State University Stakeholders’ Forum took place on Saturday, 8th May, 2013, with an attendance of eminent personalities including women leaders, traditional rulers, Alumni Association members, leaders of Igbo, Hausa, Igbira (Ebira) communities, parents, guardians and other Stakeholders throughout the country.
At the forum held at the Main Auditorium of the University, several parents and guardians expressed shock that some students gave them wrong information about fees payable in the University but commended the Vice-Chancellor for giving them the correct information on school fees. They also commended the efforts being made to develop the
University. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Oladipo Aina had briefed the participants on the general situation on the University,including the positive development in academic and infrastructureas well as the welfare package for staff and students. He reeled out to the participants the challenges confronting the institution.
Among the challenges are lack of adequate funding and lukewarm attitude of students on payment of feesand urged the forum to critically discuss the challenges.
He further suggested some of the areas to be discussed to include prompt payment of all approved fees by students, endowment of chairs, facilitating/donation in cash and kinds, patronageby government and corporate organizations of the consultancy services available in the University as well as counseling students on decent and proper
behaviour while discouraging them(students) from materialism and mundane pursuits.
Professor Aina also presented before the participants, a comparison of fees payable in both federal and state Universities in the South west of Nigeria showing that EKSU’s fees were among the lowest.
During the meeting, several stakeholders reacted to the situation and resolved, among others, that students must pay their school fees as at when due, that the stakeholders’ forum be held annually or bi-annually and that regular reports of activities, of students and their results be made known to their parents, wards and guardians.
A focal group comprising eminent stakeholders was formed at the occasion. The chairman of the group is a respectable traditional ruler, His Royal Highness, the Oluyin of Iyin- Ekiti, Oba Ademola Ajakaiye.
In a communiqué signed by the chairman organizing committee of the Stakeholders Forum, Professor Kunle Ajayi and chairman communiqué committee, Dr (Mrs) Kemi Ogundana, the forum suggested that Stakeholders’ Forum on faculty basis be established to allow proper interaction of parents with faculty and departments.
The forum also suggested that a passionate plea be made to Ekiti State Government to increase the subvention given to the University.
