The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has said that only General Muhammadu Buhari has the latitude to apply to the examination body for the verification of his result.
WAEC’s Public Affairs Officer, National Office, Demianus Ojijeogu, said the council had no right to disclose any person’s result to the public.
Ojijeogu said, “Only the court of law can mandate us to release such information. It is not something that we will easily divulge to the public unless there is a directive from the court.
“Again, the general’s result is a personal document. It is akin to going to the bank with somebody’s account number to seek clarification of the person’s account. No responsible bank will respond to that enquiry.”
WAEC Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos, Mr. Yusuf Ari also said that, “No individual has the legal right to approach WAEC for the verification of another person’s result except the owner of the result.”
He explained that the constitutional right vested on the Freedom of Information law does not include invasion of privacy adding, “The certificate in question belongs to Muhammadu Buhari and he alone has the right to apply for verification.
“Be that as it may, WAEC cannot take any action except, the owner of the certificate asked us to do so. We are an independent body, therefore, we cannot be partisan on this issue,” he said.
According to Ari, all the former Head of State needs to do is to apply by given WAEC the name of his school, Examination number and year of the examination and the result will be verified.
However, after verification of the results, it will be forwarded to the institution and not the owner.
