Vice-Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, Professor Vincent Tenebe, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to use his good offices to grant amnesty to prisoners who are graduating from the institution.

He made the appeal yesterday at a pre-convocation press conference in Lagos, saying that granting amnesty to the prisoners after graduation would enable them contribute to the socio-economic wellbeing of the country.

He noted that the university was not only for academic and vocational knowledge and skills, but also for character formation and reformation, which he said the prisons were also known for.

The VC, however, disclosed that three prisoners, two from Kirikiri Maximum Prisons, Lagos, and one from Enugu Prisons are in the university’s graduating list of over 7,000 students for tomorrow’s convocation at the National Theatre in Lagos.

National Mirror recalls that one prisoner; Tuwanse Kabiru, from Kirikiri Prisons was among those who graduated from the institution last year.

The graduands from the institution’s study centres nationwide, according to him, would be conferred with Bachelor, Masters Degree, Diplomas and Certificates in various courses. This year’s convocation, he added, will be fourth in the series.

Speaking further, Tenebe stated that the immediate past Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, and the late Dr Stella Adadevoh, who was infected with Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, and died while treating the Liberian- American Patrick Sawyer last year, will be honoured by the university at the event.

He added that while Abubakar would be awarded Doctor of Letters (Honorary causa), Adadevoh would be honoured with posthumous Doctors of Science award.

Tenebe explained that the two personalities were considered for the honour based on their strong contributions to their professions and humanity.
