The Vice-Chancellor, the Federal University of Technology, Akure Professor Adebiyi Daramola has called on Nigerian Universities to proffer solutions to technological problems and societal needs throughfocused and need-driven research in order to eradicate global hunger.

The Vice-Chancellor made this call while delivering an address on eradication of global hunger at a lecture organized by the University .

He advised stakeholders to provide the much needed impetus for the rapid technological and industrial development of the nation and also serve as linkage mechanism between the Nigerian Universities and the Industry.

He advised them to enhance the University Community linkages through capacity building and development partnerships.

A Professor of Biology, Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, Georgia, USA, Professor George Mbata, who delivered the University lecture titled “Eradication of Global Hunger with emphasis on Africa: Role of PostHarvest Integrated Post Management” noted that all tiers of government in the African continent have the responsibility of organizing subsistent farmers into cooperatives by providing them with financial support and personnel training to manage both the front-end and rear-end technologies needed to improve productivity and mitigate post-harvest losses.

He recalled that almost a quarter of global crop food production (crops, terrestrial livestock, fish) is wasted due to post harvest losses, disclosing that savings from mitigation of post-harvest food losses will generally exceed the modest goal set by the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) for addressing hunger and poverty in Africa.

The Don advised Nigerian Universities to encourage aggressive research collaborations in the area ofAgriculture. He charged government at all levels to pay more attention to Agricultural practices and called on the University Management to place emphasis on collaboration among professionals in the Agricultural sector.

He stressed the need for the funding of Agricultural storage in order to provide food and for the protection of commodities from pests, while emphasizing the need for the quality of produce/products to justify technological investment.
