A strong and committed leadership is a crucial factor in the effort to curtail the menace of cultism in higher institutions of learning in the country.

The Director, Kwara State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Tanimu Alkali Adalkhali, stated this penultimate Monday (June 9, 2014) when he visited the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali in his office.

Mr. Adalkhali explained that with good leadership, cultism would be brought to “zero or minimal level” in the institutions, pointing out that “leadership affects what happens in the universities.

The Director noted that the University of Ilorin has demonstrated that with effective leadership, the social menace could be curtailed, saying, “This is why Unilorin remains the number one University in the country”.

Stressing that the Department of State Services is not just interested in security matters but good governance as well, Mr. Adalkhali said that the Department had been instrumental to the reduction of cultism and promotion of peace on campuses.

The DSS Director commended the University of Ilorin on its stable academic calendar, noting that “this is the only University in the country where parents could plan and budget for their children’s education without the fear of their children overstaying their courses of study.”

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his joy at having the Director on the campus, maintaining that the security outfit has lived up to expectation. “You are very professional in your disposition. You know us more than we know ourselves.

We are very grateful to have people like you and we thank you for your sincere commendation”, he said.

Prof. Ambali admitted that the University is standing strong today and experiencing minimal cases of cultism because of the contributions of several people particularly the Department of State Services.

The Vice-Chancellor told the DSS boss, “Your cooperation has been good and we are also available for necessary cooperation. You are very helpful in maintaining peace on the campus. You can, therefore, take advantage of courses offered by our Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies.”

The Department of State Services (DSS), also known as State Security Service (SSS), is the primary domestic intelligence agency of the Federal Government. It is primarily responsible for intelligence gathering within the country and for the protection of senior government officials, particularly the President and state governors.
