Many graduates enrolled for the Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Programme (YESAP) of the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) meant for secondary schools leavers.

KRPC’s initiated the programme in 2008 for secondary school leavers in its host communities as part of efforts to empower the youth. So far, over 400 youth have been empowered through the programme. During the flagged off of the fifth edition of the scheme yesterday, our correspondent gathered some of the participants are graduates and diploma holders.

Under the scheme, the beneficiaries are trained on vocation including carpentry, welding and fabrication , GSM repairs, Shoe making, Auto mechanic,auto spraying and production of household products such as soap, detergent, air freshener paint among others.

Our correspondent reports that at the end of the six months training, the beneficiaries’ gets start up capital from the KRPC in order to start their own businesses.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the programme, manager public affairs department of KRPC, Mallam Abdullahi Idris confirmed that some of the participants are graduates.

He said a total of 120 youth were selected from across Kaduna state for the skill acquisition training that will last for six months.

“Having received the nominations from the community leaders we screened them to make sure they possessed the minimum secondary school certificate as stipulated. I’m happy to say that not only have all scaled through this hurdle, there are quite a number with higher qualifications such as degrees, Higher and Ordinarydiplomas among them,” he said.

In his address, the Managing Director of KRPC, Engineer Bolanle Ayodele said the programme was conceived to make the youth in their host communities self employed. He assured that they will continue to sponsorthe programme and cautioned the beneficiaries against anti-social activities.

District Head of Kamazou, Deacon Auta Makama said KRPC has been impacting positively on its host communities and assured them of their support and corporation.
