The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), on wednesday, accused the federal government of partiality in the distributing of funds to universities and polytechnics under its Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

Executive Secretary of NBTE, Dr. Adamu Kazaure, gave the charge while addressing rectors of polytechnics across the country at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The rectors were at the polytechnic on a study tour of the feat recorded under the school’s entrepreneurship programmes.
Kazaure, who spoke through the Assistant Director, Entrepreneurial Programme, NBTE, Abdu Isa Kofarmata, said polytechnics and technical schools should be given more priority by the government in view of their importance to the technology/economic development of the country.

The NBTE boss recalled that while TETFund made available the sum of N100 million under its intervention fund between 2012 and 2013 to universities, no money was given to polytechnics and technical schools.

He charged heads of poly-technics to explore other points to access funds for their entrepreneurship programmes.
Such points, he said, included Dangote and Tony Elumelu Foundations.

He lamented that some chief executives of tertiary institutions lacked necessary skills to write proposals to enable them access such funds.
He said the fortunes of polytechnics would have changed if they had accessed 50 per cent of the N100 million given to universities under the TETFund intervention fund.

Kazaure, stressing the importance of entrepreneurship education, said the federal government mandated polytechnics to include the scheme in order to reduce poverty and graduate unemployment.

Also, the NBTE challenged rectors of Nigerian polytechnics to be more pro-active and come up with proposals to enable them access the various funds and grants for technical and polytechnic education in the country.
