About 4,320 fresh students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri were on January, Friday 25, 3013 formally inducted during the 31st matriculation ceremony of the University. The Vice-Chancellor of theUniversity Prof. Chigozie C. Asiabaka revealed the increase of admission quota for the University by the National Universities Commission (NUC) from 3000 to 4,320 with effect from 2012/2013 academic session.

He therefore congratulated the fresh students and counted them lucky for scaling through the admission hurdles out of over 32,000 candidates who applied.

During the ceremony, Prof. Asiabaka announced a scholarship scheme for the best undergraduate student in each School of the University with effect from the current academic session. He further explained that the modality for the award of the scholarship would be based on student with the highest cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

According to Prof. Asiabaka, the entitlements for the beneficiaries of the scheme include tuition and hostel accommodation. He explained that the sustenance of the award will depend on the high academic performance.

Prof. Asiabaka therefore charged the new students with studious attitude, to shun cultism, violence and all manner of vices that could mar their academic ambition. Prof. Asiabaka used the opportunity to disclose his efforts for transforming the University in line with the vision of his administration’s Quest for Excellence.

The new face of the University according to him is eloquently evident in the transparent conduct of examination, timely marking and grading of scripts as well as release of results, zero tolerance to sorting and improved environmental friendlinessto students and staff. The high point of the ceremony was the swearing ofthe oath of allegiance by the matriculating students.
