Candidate of the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC) Retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has been declared the winner of last Saturday presidential election. Buhari defeated the sitting president Goodluck Jonathan after garnering a total vote of 15, 427, 943 according to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
President Jonathan polled 12, 853, 162 leaving a difference of 2, 574, 781. Both scored the constitutionally required one-third votes in 25 states but Buhari scored the majority vote to clinch victory in what is historically the first time an opposition party will defeat an incumbent president in the country.
Buhari who hails from Katsina state, north-west Nigeria won most of the states in the north and all the south west states except Ekiti. The biggest votes, 1.9 million, for Buhari came from Kano state, North West of the country.
