The management of the University of Porthacourt, on Monday ordered the immediate closure of the institution following students’ protests over hike in tuition fees.
Below is the memo sent to schoolwatch.com.ng by the school management;
The University Senate at its 418th Meeting (Emergency) held on Monday, 11th April, 2016, deliberated extensively on the violent demonstration by the students and the resultant disruption of the First Semester Examinations of the 2015/2016 Session.
Senate therefore resolved to close down the University with immediate effect. To this end, all students are to vacate the University campus immediately. No student is expected to be found in the University premises beyond 6.00pm today, Monday, 11th April, 2016.
Reports also reaching us confirmed that armed officials of the Nigerian Police Force have shot dead one of the students.
It was gathered that the protester, Comrade Peter – the president of Faculty of Management Science – was immediately rushed to the hospital after the gunfire but did not survive the wound.
The deceased, Peter is seen riddled with bullet holes in his torso.
The witness, @Roland_speaks continued via various tweets on twitter:
