The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has charged academic departments in the University to dispense their responsibilities to their students under a convivial atmosphere such that the students will have a sense of belonging both academically and emotionally.

Prof. Ambali gave this advice last Tuesday (May 10, 2014) while commissioning the Department of Statistics’ E-Library, Reading Room and the distribution of Compact Discs (CDs) with electronic books and journals to fresh students of the Department.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Raheem Adebayo Lawal, noted that when lecturers are cruel to their students, such students, after graduation, would not have positive memory of the University. He added that it will also be difficult for the University to count on the support of such disgruntled students.

Pointing out that the initiative of the Department of Statistics has greatly enriched the University’s one-student-one-I-pad initiative, Prof. Ambali charged the Department to produce an electronic version of statistical tables used by students during examinations to discourage students from the temptation to write on statistical tables in breach of examination guidelines.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Prof. B. L. Adeleke, said that the Faculty was “happy to be part of the event, which shows that the younger academics are living up to the confidence being reposed in them by the University authorities.”

The Ag. Head of the Department of Statistics, Dr. W. B. Yahya, appreciated the University management for its support to the Department over the years. He said that the Department drew the inspiration to embark on the Electronic Library project from the National Universities Commission (NUC)’s directive on departmental library and the University’s I-pad initiative.
