The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised alarm over the supposed maladministration of the Lagos State University (LASU) by the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, describing his administrative style as inimical to the academic excellence LASU is known for.
At a press briefing today in Abuja, coordinator of the union’s zonal chapter Dr. Sulaiman Mohammed said the institution’s vice chancellor has failed to entrench standard academic practices in the university, thereby reducing LASU to a state of ignominy.
“After the struggle between the union and the students on the one hand, and the university administration on the other, ASUU had hoped for normalcy returning to LASU. But Prof. Obafunwa has continued to fan the embers of discord.
“Only recently, Obafunwa stripped the incumbent chairperson of ASUU-LASU Dr. Adekunle Idris of the PhD he earned several years ago all in the name of senate of the Lagos state University not properly wording the degree.
He has enthroned mediocrity and intimidation across the campus of the university,” the statement read.
“Apart from selective promotion programs, he has devised a new term ‘promotion to vacancy’ whereby academics are supposed to be promoted if and only if there is a vacancy for such promotion. This betrays the inexperience of the VC in the proper running of the University system,” he said.
Also reacting, a former president of ASUU, Dr. Dipo Fashina, condemned the administrative style of the VC who according to him was not academically qualified to be a vice chancellor in the first place. Dr. Fashina said it would be tragic for the institution if the excesses of the vice chancellor are not checked.
The union called on Nigerians and Visitor to the university, Governor Babatunde Fashola, to urgently intervene, so as to restore what they called the eroding glory of the institution.
