The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), on Wednesday, issued seven-day ultimatum to Osun State government to pay pension funds deducted from its staff’s salary or face legal action.

The national vice chairman of COEASU, Mr Smart Olugbeko while Addressing a mass rally organised by the ASUP and COEASU under the umbrella of Council of Academic Staff Unions of Osun State Owned Tertiary Institutions (CASUOSTI), in Ilesa, described the failure of the state government to remit pension funds being deducted from staff’s salary as wicked, reprehensible, iniquitous, abhorrent, and illegal.

According to Olugbeko, “the law is very clear on the issue of remitting deductions into pension fund accounts. Upon deduction of the percentage to be contributed by the employee, such deduction should be remitted within seven days.”

He asserted that the need to go to court for a redress on the non-remittance of pension deductions was reached after all avenues explored to resolve the matter failed.

The chairman of ASUP, Osun Polytechnic, Iree, said the decision of the unions to stage the mass rally was borne out of frustration due to series of failed negotiations.
