At its statutory meeting on July 25, 2013, the University Senate approved the proposal of the College of Natural and applied Sciences (CONAS) to introduce three (3) new degree options in Chemistry in the following areas of study:
(2) Pharmaceutical Chemistry
(3) Environmental Chemistry
These degree programs which are open to students seeking admission into the University in the 2013/14 session will provide added knowledge, training and specialization which will enhance job opportunities for students in Industrial Chemistry after graduation.
Petroleum Chemistry is an areaof chemistry that focuses on the petroleum and petrochemical industry involving the applications of chemistry in the exploration, exploitation and refining of crude oil and natural gas, and in providing laboratory support for the chemical analysis of petroleum and tracking of oil spills and process control at the refinery.
Also, the research efforts of petroleum chemists have helped in developing catalysts used in the refining process and creating new polymers forfibers and resins in petrochemicals. Nigeria’s oil and petroleum industry offers chemists a broad range of work opportunities over a wide area of chemistry including collection and laboratory analysis of field samples for petroleum hydrocarbons, process control at refineries, oil pollution cleanups, and assisting chemical and petroleum engineers.
Pharmaceutical Chemistry is an area of chemistry that focuses on the development and evaluation of new drugs.
Modern medicine relies on a multitude of drugs produced through the efforts of pharmaceutical chemists. The most effective approaches to drug development rely on a fundamental knowledge of the chemical and biochemical basis underlying the targeted disease and how that disease affects the living system.
Chemists are at the forefront of drug design, synthesis, testing, and development.
Pharmaceutical chemists can find employment within the vast pharmaceutical industry and can be employed in government agencies that oversee food and drug regulation. They may be involved in drug synthesis or drug analysis or as a technical representative in the marketing division of a company.
Pharmaceutical chemists can work in pharmacies or chemists under the supervision of professional pharmacists and own their own businesses.
Environmental Chemistry is an area of chemistry that stresses applications of fundamental chemical principles to predict behavior of chemicals in the environment and protect our surroundings from pollution emanating from industrial activities and petroleum exploitation. Because many environmental problems are chemically related, solving them requires an application of chemical knowledge. This degree provides an excellent preparation for working in a variety of environmentally related fields particularly as Environmental Health Officers and as scientists in the petroleum industry and government regulatory agencies such as the Ministry of the Environment, Federal Environmental Protection Agency, and State Waste Management Boards.
5 Credit passes including Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English Language and any other relevant Science subject at not more than two sittings (WAEC/NECO/(SSCE/GCE), with arelevant pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and in thepost UTME) screening.
Direct Entry candidates are expected to possess at least two (2) Advanced Level GCE passes in Chemistry and other relevant subjects OR a good National Diploma (with minimum of lower credit) in Chemistry/Applied Science/Science Laboratory Technology, or NCE (with minimum of merit pass) in Chemistry from recognized institutions.
